When I started working for the HDSA DC Metro Chapter, I thought it was a great opportunity, but I could never have imagined that I would be changed and impacted by one community the way this one has. I have never met a community of people who are so strong and come together in the most inspiring of ways despite dealing with every curve ball you could be thrown in life.
I started out facilitating one support group and was soon facilitating a second in the area. The more I found my ground among this community the more hooked I was. I was fortunate enough to become involved with other projects, including being given the opportunity being in DC to advocate on Capital Hill and with Social Security. Somewhere along the way, all of these new opportunities stopped being a job and started becoming a career path and a role I could no longer imagine not doing. Last year Medstar Georgetown University Hospital opened the first HD Center in the DC Metro Area and I was asked to be a part of it and turn HD into my full time job. It was one of the easiest decisions I have ever made.
HD is now my full time job. I learn something new every day and am inspired all the time by the families I work with. I am thankful every day to not only have a fantastic local community but a community of people and other professionals of HD from all over the country that continue to teach me and allow me to be apart of their community.
