Larry Haigh is a longstanding volunteer and advocate for HDSA and our HD families throughout the state of Illinois and nationwide. Starting as early as participating with the NYA, he has known of HD since he was in college when his grandmother was diagnosed. He knew right when he found out that Huntington’s disease runs in his family that he wanted to become more educated and find out what he could do to spread awareness for this disease. While transitioning from the NYA to becoming more involved with the HDSA Illinois Chapter, his mother tested negative for the gene learning that he too was negative. It has been his mission ever since to do what he can to spread awareness and do everything he can for all HD families.
He says, “We’re not related by blood, but we are related because of HD and that is something that makes the HD Family special and unbreakable. It is a strong group of individuals that are bound together and all fighting for the same thing”.
Larry has volunteered in almost every capacity throughout the years. He has attended and presented at Education Days, been to Capital Hill for the Parity Act, served 2 terms of VP and will be serving his 2nd term of President next year for the HDSA Illinois Chapter, has served as Committee Chair & Co-Chair for multiple events including Naperville Team Hope Walk, Central IL Team Hope Walk, Baggo Tournament, HD Day w/ the Chicago White Sox, has volunteered at many different HDSA Illinois Chapter events and assists the chapter in all other areas that he can. Larry has committed himself to the HD families, and our community is grateful for his support and motivation to continue fighting when others can’t.
