HDSA Awards 2023 Berman-Topper Family HD Career Development Fellowship 

This week, HDSA announced the newest recipient of the Berman-Topper Family HD Career Development Fellowship, Dr. Chis Kay from the University of British Columbia. Dr. Kay will work in the lab of Dr. Michael Hayden to investigate CAG repeat expansion in precious human brain tissue samples. This study will examine how abnormalities in CAG repeat expansion may affect disease onset and progression in HD. To read the press release, click here. HD Awareness Month: Global HD Experiences 

As HD Awareness month draws to a close, it’s important to remember why we call attention to Huntington’s disease every May. People all over the world are affected by HD, and many lack resources and support in their journeys with the disease. This week, the New York Times published a piece that offers a glimpse into the lives of the Echeverria family in Barranquilla, Columbia. The Echeverria family is the second largest known extended family affected by HD. Through donations of their time and samples, researchers are learning incredibly valuable information about how different genetic variations influence the course of HD. However, the local medical resources in Barranquilla offer them little support for their day-to-day challenges with the disease. HDSA’s 38th Annual Convention Begins next week!  

HDSA is excited to welcome HD community members, researchers, clinicians, industry partners, and more to its 38th Annual Convention in New Orleans, which will begin one week from today on June 1st. This will be the first fully in-person Convention since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. This means that only key sessions will be live-streamed; you can check out how to access these by visiting the event app here. If you are unable to join in-person there will also be a selection of recorded sessions available online later in the summer.
